Theme Cruises

Years ago I went on my first cruise. I was in my early twenties and went with two good friends cruising down the Mexican Riviera. Overall, we had a great time. However, our agent had booked us on a cruise with a large group of Dixieland Music fans. Everywhere we turned that week we ran into another dixieland band playing. It felt like Main Street Disneyland! While fun for some people, it was not quite what we had in mind. However, we still enjoyed the nightlife, the ports and found relatively quiet areas to relax by the pool and drink our umbrella drinks.

Now, on today's larger ships, even large groups can be easy to avoid. However, it's good to know before you make final payment if there are any large groups you may want to avoid. For example, I have a small group interested in taking a weekend cruise. The sailing they chose also has a large group doing a murder mystery. Chances are they will barely notice this group. However, I thought it was important that they knew what was going on and could make the choice. They chose to go ahead.

So, if you are booking a cruise, try to find out from your agent if there are any large groups on board or if this is a theme cruise. Then you can make an informed decision if this is the right cruise for you.
